High-quality child care is considered important for a child’s overall development. However, with an increase in the number of nuclear families and working mothers, children do not get as good a care as they used to get in joint families in the past, when their grandparents used Ayurvedic methods, such as massages, for their bone and muscle strengthening and skin rejuvenation.
Breast feeding and oil massaging are a great source of nutrition and strength for kids, and it has been a tradition since time immemorial. But do we really get to see this these days? How can we! The dependency on products available in the market that claim to be nutrient-rich and effective in muscle strengthening and skin rejuvenation has grown manifold over the years, and most of the buyers do not seem to understand the long-term impact of these products on their children’s health despite the media reports saying that ‘cancer-causing chemicals’ or ‘chemicals of high concern’ have been found in some children’s products.
Moreover, the children having untrammelled access to junk food coupled with the increased sedentary activities like using smart phones and computers have given rise to many lifestyle diseases like obesity and eye disorders.
Shashtika in Sanskrit means sixty, Shali means rice, Pinda means cataplasm, and Sweda stands for sweat. A special type of rice harvested in 60 days and milk are the main ingredients used in the therapy. Both rice and milk constitute an important part of our daily diet. But here, they are processed with medicinal herbs and used externally to provide nourishment to muscles and bones.
Rice has well-known health benefits as it is rich in nutrients such as protein, vitamins, zinc and phosphorus. It is a good source of energy, improves nervous system health, prevents constipation, and is good for skin also.
Milk is a great source of protein and other essential nutrients like calcium, vitamin D, B vitamins, phosphorus, and potassium. Milk is good for bones and skin, strengthens teeth, reduces the risk of strokes and obesity, and prevents heartburns.
The medicinal herb Bala used in the therapy is helpful in reducing the symptoms of fatigue and in the management headaches.
Ashwagandha, another medicinal herb used in the therapy, helps reduce stress apart from having other health benefits.
