Multiple sclerosis is an auto-immune disorder. It affects the brain and spinal cord. It is a type of inflammatory disease that affect the nerve fibres especially myelin sheath. Thus, the transmission of nerve impulses is disturbed and the patient cannot control his limbs, and facial paralysis, visual disorder and other ailments occur.
The most common symptoms of MS are: Muscle weakness; Numbness and tingling; Lhermitte’s sign: A person may experience a sensation like an electric shock when they move their neck, known as Lhermitte’s sign; Bladder problems: Loss of bladder control is an early sign of MS; Bowel problems; Fatigue: Fatigue is one of the most common symptoms of MS; Dizziness and vertigo; Sexual dysfunction; Spasticity and muscle spasms: This is an early sign of MS; Tremors; Vision problems; Gait and mobility changes; Emotional changes and depression; Learning and memory problems; Pain. Less common symptoms include: headache; hearing loss; itching; respiratory or breathing problems; seizures; speech disorders and swallowing problems.
The exact cause of MS is not known, but there are various risk factors for MS:- age- between 20-40 years; sex- women are twice prone than men; genetic factors; smoking; various infections pneumonia, HHV6,EBV; Vit-D deficiency, Vit-B12 deficiency. All these can cause multiple sclerosis.
The doctor will carry out a physical and neurological examination, ask about symptoms, and consider the person’s medical history. No single test can confirm a diagnosis, so a doctor will use several strategies when deciding whether a person meets the criteria for a diagnosis. These include:
There are various ayurvedic therapies which can be used along with medicines to improve the quality of life of the patient. These therapies are brihana basti, nasya, shirodhara, netra tarpan, patra pinda potli swedana, swedana etc for 7/14/21 days at regular interval. But all these therapies are prescribed after proper evaluation of the patient. And the medicinal herbs that can be used are ashwagandha, sankhpushpi, brahmi, shatavari, musli etc.
