Ayurveda for children

It is heart-wrenching to see children on hospital beds, ICUs, and at day care clinics writhing in pain or battling for life. There is a long list of diseases that can affect the children of all ages and genders. Sometimes, parents are shocked to see what appears to be a healthy child is actually suffering from a major disorder. Thus, it is imperative that parents get a general health assessment conducted on their children and observe carefully their growth and development.

Given below are some of the major categories of paediatric disorders:

  • Malnutrition: It is a disorder that occurs in children due to improper diet. Over nutrition leads to obesity because of more intake of nutrients than a child’s body need. Obesity then comes with its own set of complications. Under nutrition, on the other hand, is due to lack of enough nutrients and results in both bodily as well emotional changes such weak muscles, persistent tiredness, increase in other illnesses and infections, etc. Kwashiorkor is one such example of malnutrition which is caused by the inadequate intake of protein even though the calorie intake is adequate.
  • Infectious Diseases: There are several infectious childhood diseases which pose more threat to children in countries with weaker health-care systems such as India. These include measles, German measles, chicken pox, mumps, etc.
  • Respiratory Disorders: Common cold, tonsillitis (acute infection of tonsils), croup (inflammatory diseases of the larynx), allergic rhinitis (inflammation of the nasal passage), asthma, sinusitis, bronchitis, and pneumonia are also common children.

There are still more diseases which children battle such as cardiovascular and blood disorders, gastrointestinal and liver disorders, kidney and urinary-tract disorders, nervous-system disorders, endocrine disorders, skin disorders, etc.

Ayurveda for children

Routines matter a lot. From daily diet of your children to the activities they do, getting these things right is prerequisite to their development. Ayurveda champions the idea of “starting early”. It focuses on inculcating healthy habits in children to enable them to ward off diseases and maintain a proper lifestyle. It is difficult for any disease to breach the protective shield developed in a child by following Ayurvedic lifestyle.
Since each child is born with distinct characteristics, the approach to their wellbeing has to be as per their doshas which parents, however, may not be able to decide on their own. Wellness experts must be consulted and their instructions followed in letter and spirit.
