According to Ayurveda, the functioning of eye is under the control of “Alochaka Pitta.” Pitta is one of the governing elements of the body which represents all the functions of fire. This Pitta is governed by “Pachaka Pitta.” Which means that the eye and its functioning is under the direct control and influence of gut fire. Since the eye is located in the head, it is also affected by “Imbalance of Vayu”, mainly “Prana Vayu”. The other subtype of Vata, Pitta and Kapha can also influence in the manifestation of eye disorders of the eye and nerve related diseases are caused due to morbid pitta. Netra Tarana is handy in these cases.
“Akshi Tarpana” is one of the specialized treatments for various eye disorders. Askshi Tarpana acts as both preventive and curative therapy for maintaining normal curative therapy for maintaining normal healthy condition of eyes. “Akshi” means “Eye” and Tarpana means “Nourishment.” It gives strength to eyes. The medicated ghee is poured over the eyelids in an enclosure built around the eye out of wheat flour. It is a producure wherein lukewarm medicated ghee is made to stay stagnant in the eyes for a speculated time in a specific formed frame.
Netra or Akshi means “the Eye” and Tarpana means “Nourishment”. Netra Tarpan means “Nourishment of Eye” or “a Treatment which nourishes the eye.” In this process, “medicated oil or ghee” is filled in a flour compartment constructed around. This is called as Netra Vasti, i.e. pooling of the eye.
