Nasya is one of the five detoxifying Ayurveda Therapies, which is Panchakarma. In this therapy, medicated oil or herbal decoction is installed through the nostrils of the patient. It is also known as Errhine Therapy.
Nasya specifically helps in detoxifying and curing diseases in the area of head and neck. That is why, it is mostly used for head, ear, nose and throat related diseases. According to Ayurveda, Nose aka Nasa is the Gateway to the Human Brain. Head is one of the most important parts of the human body. And the protection and treatment of disorders affecting that area, Nasya therapy is explained in Ayurveda.
Due to pre and post procedure medicated local Abhyangam and steam, blood flow is enhanced. Due to rich blood vessels in the nasal cavity, the Nasya drug is absorbed quickly and acts according to medication used. Nerve supply and absorption through that also helps for herbs to act accordingly. It cleans up and opens micro channels within the head and neck region promoting normal flow of blood, lymph as well as Doshas.
According to the human anatomy, behind the nose within our head resides the most important gland of the human body i.e. Pituitary Gland, also known as ”master gland”. Pituitary gland essentially controls all major bodily functions because of its control over hormones. It is hypothesized that action of Nasya on this achieves wonderful results for various disorders.
Due to the effectiveness of this therapy, in the initial stage of various diseases, it can postpone severe progression of it. This prevents it from eventually leading to much invasive surgical intervention, for example in case of cervical spondylitis.
Performed carefully under expert supervision, there are no ill effects of this non-invasive therapy.
After the initial assessment of the patient is done, the Nasya drug is decided. The drug for Nasya therapy is chosen according to the disease and its severity. And, if the aim is Detoxification, the Nasya drug is chosen according to the patient’s constitution.
Step1. On the day of therapy, post local head, neck and shoulder “Abhyangam” with medicinal oil and steam by vapors of herbal decoction is given.
Step2. The patient has to continue to be in a lying down position. And later on Nasya drug is introduced within both nostrils of the patient.
Step3. Post drug instillation, the patient is asked to stay in that position for 10-15 minutes. During that time light local Abhyangam is performed along with more herbal steam.
Step4. Later on the patient is asked to gargle with warm medicated water and to spit out all the mucus, if accumulated.
After all the steps of the Nasya Therapy is done, patients can go back to their routine activities. Washing the Head on the same day is Prohibited. And the Head is to be covered that day to protect it from wind, heat and dust.
