Parkinson’s Disease (PD) is one of the most common neurologic disorder. It is a progressive nervous system disorder that affects movement. Affecting approximately 1% of individuals older than 60 years and causing progressive disability that can be slowed, but not halted, by treatment. The 2 major neuropathologic findings in Parkinson disease are loss of pigmented dopaminergic neurons of the substantia nigra pars compacta and the presence of Lewy bodies and Lewy neurites.
Tremors, slowed movement, rigid muscles, impaired posture and balance, loss of automatic movements, speech language, writing changes, some of the neurological issues are executive dysfunction, cognitive flexibility, abstract thinking, depression, anxiety, apathy and psychosis etc. are the common symptoms which are commonly complained by patient suffering from Parkinson’s.
The causes of Parkinsonism are genetic mutations, presence of Lewy’s body, Alpha-synuclein found within Lewy bodies, medications that are used to treat psychosis, major psychiatric disorder, nausea; repeated head trauma; certain neurodegenerative disorder; exposure to toxins such as carbon monoxide, cyanide and organic solvents; certain brain lesions like brain tumour, fluid build-up.
The risk factor of Parkinson’s disease is age (People usually develop the disease around age 60 or older); Heredity; Sex (Men are more likely to develop Parkinson’s disease than are women) and exposure to toxins.
Since the cause of Parkinson’s is unknown, so the preventive measures are also not known. But some researchers have shown that regular aerobic exercise, intake of coffee, tea, green tea can prevent Parkinson’s disease.
Parkinson’s disease can be diagnosed by proper medical history, a review of your signs and symptoms, and a neurological and physical examination, MRI, ultrasound of brain, PET Scan, SPECT, DaTscan.
In Ayurveda there are various therapies which can be given for Parkinson’s disease are Matra Basti, Yapna Basti, Nasya karma, Shirodhara, Shiro basti, Shiro pichu. Along with this various various ayurvedic medicines are also prescribed like ashwagandha churna, dashmool kwath., brahmi, bhahmi rasayan, amalki churna, bala tail, ksheer bala tail, shankhpushpi etc.
Tadasana, urdhva hastasana, uttanasana, virabhadrasana, supta baddha asana etc are the yoga therapies that can be done for Parkinson’s.
Apart from this some of the lifestyle modifications can be done like focus on diet likeproper balance of fruits, vegetables, whole grains; proper rest; exercise regularly, by managing stress, ask for support if you are getting stressed or depressed due to fluctuated or inappropriate motor functions.
