The main symptom of Migraine is the very severe Headache sensation usually on  either side of Head. In some cases it may also happen on both sides or in the whole head area. Other than the main symptomatology the whole episode of Migraine takes progress through four stages namely- Prodromal, Aura, Attack and Postdromal stage.

Prodromal stage- In this stage, patient experiences noticeable changes that alarm the upcoming Migraine attack. This includes neck stiffness, increased urine frequency and  mood changes.

Aura stage- This stage is much closer to the Migrainous attack. Aura is the  intolerable hypersensitivity to light, bright light and sound which may last for  several minutes to few hours.

Attack stage- The main Migraine attack starts gradually and becomes  severe with throbbing and pulsatile with nausea and vomiting.

Postdromal stage- In this stage of Migraine attack the patient is in state of tiredness, confusion and exhaustion.

Although the exact causes of migraines are unknown, heredity and environmental  factors play a vital role in this. Moreover the triggering factors could be understood as the  causative factors.

Changes in women's hormones- Headache triggers due to hormonal shift like  oestrogen levels fluctuation before or during menstrual cycles, pregnancy, or  menopause, use oral contraceptives and other hormonal drugs.

Alcohol, tea, coffee and other carbonated and caffeine containing  drinks can also trigger Migraine attack.

    Stress

Hypersensitive stimuli to the senses- Bright or flashing lights, loud noises,  perfume, paint thinner, secondary (passive) smoke, and other strong odours can  cause migraines in some people.

Sleep patterns shift, sleep deprivation, excessive sleep and late night shifts of  job.

Changes in the weather- change in barometric pressure can also trigger Migraine.

Medications- oral contraceptives and vasodilators like nitroglycerin.

Certain foods- aged cheeses, salty and processed foods, skipping meals can also trigger the attack.

Additives to foods- artificial sweetener aspartame and the preservative  monosodium glutamate (MSG).

There are many risk factors involved in Migraine, including:

Gender- females are three times more prone migraine than males, possibly due  to the monthly hormonal shift.

Family history of migraine- most migraine sufferers have migraine-prone  family members.

Associated medical conditions- Depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder, sleep  difficulties or epilepsy among other medical conditions.

Age- Migraines can start at any age, although they are most common  throughout puberty. Migraines tend to peak in your 30s, then steadily lessen  in severity and frequency over the next few decades.

Hormonal shifts- Migraine headaches can start soon before or shortly after  menstruation for women who suffer from them. During pregnancy or  menopause, they may also change. Migraines usually get better after  menopause. Hormone replacement therapy drugs also aid the same.

Drug overuse- taking pain relievers too frequently can result in severe  medication-overuse headaches. Combinations of aspirin, acetaminophen, and  caffeine appear to pose the most danger.

    1. Since there is not a sure shot cure for Migraine, symptomatic treatment and  “prevention is better than cure” quotes accounts perfect to be prevented from  fortune Migraine attack.
    2. Lifestyle changes and dietary modifications are some of the many focuses to  prevent Migraine.
    3. Stress-reduction approaches such as exercise, relaxation techniques, and  biofeedback may help to lessen the frequency and intensity of migraines.  Biofeedback is a technique that uses electrical instruments to teach you how  to control your heartbeat, blood pressure and muscle tension.
    4. Keep track of what seems to set off your migraines. You can find out what  foods and drugs you should stay away from. It also assists you in determining  what you should do, such as maintaining a regular sleep schedule and eating regular meals.
    5. Resting in a quiet, darkish environment with your eyes closed. Applying a cool towel or an ice pack to your brow.
    6. Drinking plenty of water can also help a lot.
